Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

Krish limps Under The Gun with {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, Adelstein raises to $4,000 from middle position with {k-Spades}{10-Spades}, Tom Dwan calls from the cut-off with {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, as does JRB with {q-Clubs}{j-Spades} from the button. When the action comes back to Krish he comes along as well. Pot Size: $18,500

Flop:

4-handed to the ultimate action flop of {j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. Krish checks over to Garrett, who has flopped a double belly buster, and decides to make a standard continuation bet of $9,000 (49% pot).

Tom Dwan decides to see a turn with his pair plus gutshot and JRB just calls with top pair decent kicker, while Krish folds. Pot Size: $45,500

Turn:

The {q-Spades} on the turn is the most exciting card in the deck as it gives Garrett the stone cold nuts and at the same time makes JRB Top Two!

Adelstein chooses a rather smallish sizing for his second barrel of 44% pot size and JRB again just calls. Pot Size: $85,500

The {3-Hearts} on the river is as blank as it gets. So far the pot is comparatively small given the strength of both hands, but this is about to change.

Adelstein bets a massive $125,000 into the $85,500 pot and gets snap-called to win the largest pot of High Stakes Poker Season 9 so far worth a whopping $335,500.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

Since it’s the biggest pot of High Stakes Poker Season 9. let’s take an in-depth look at it.

Preflop is pretty standard, since we have four calling hands with potential, but none of them is strong enough to 3-bet.

The Jack-high flop with two clubs is an absolute action flop as it hits the average calling range very hard plus a straight is present with a hand such as 108s.

Although, Garrett has a double gutshot and an overcard, he is only 27% to win the hand against JRB’s top pair, while Dwan has a mere 14%. JRB should raise here to find out where he stands with his top pair, but decides to just call.

The odds change suddenly, when the Queen appears on the turn, boosting Adelstein to 90%, while diminishing Bellande to 10% odds and having “durrrr” drawing dead. In addition, this spells trouble for JRB as he improves to Top Two Pair. Adelstein elects to bet only 44% pot, probably because he doesn’t want to lose his customer holding the Nuts. Quick call by JRB.

The river changes nothing and now Garrett, shows once again why he is one of the best in the game in maximizing value.

The overbet and value raise are his signature moves and he puts the former into good work by betting 1.5x pot. With Adelstein betting all three streets in a 4-way pot, JRB has to think about what he can beat here.

Nevertheless, Top Two Pair is simply too strong to fold in the long-run, since Adelstein is polarized and you can beat a busted flush draw as well as Q-10. Bellande insta-calls just to get shown the Stone Cold Nuts.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

Beautiful overbet by Garrett Adelstein. He correctly puts JRB on a very strong hand and manages to extract the maximum on the river.

The art of value betting is a very underrated skill in poker, especially in live cash games. Garrett has mastered this skill to perfection during countless hours of live cash.

It’s also one of the main reasons, why he is one of the biggest winners in those games.
