The German tournament star opens the video by answering yes, it is still possible, but then adds a “but”, promising to explain in greater detail what the big picture is today.
Starting with online poker, he says the games are not dead and the landscape has changed far less than what he expected.
Making his comeback in 2020, Fedor Holz admitted that he was surprised just how much progress the top 20 players in the world had made.

In the video above, Fedor Holz separates poker players into three categories, based on expected earnings.
First, players who earn up to $3,000 per month, or around $10,000 to $40,000 per year, should find it easy to maintain such a standard. Holz says it is quite easy, but then again, he would, wouldn’t he?
The second category is from $50,000 to $150,000. This is obviously quite a step up and moving into the realm of money that isn’t easy to make in other disciplines or careers.
Holz says that compared to other areas he still considers this category a relatively easy goal. This should be highly motivating for any budding professionals who are contemplating raising their game to the next level.
The top pro category is definitely out of reach for many players. Holz concedes this, but how many people are seriously aiming at $200,000 or more in a year? We all know that there will always be a top level that is reserved for the very best talents.
So, what is the secret to achieving at least the second category in 2022? Holz talks about directing your energy in the right places to understand what your opponent’s typical mistakes will be.
He says that all of the information is out there online and it is more about consistent effort than the creativity that was necessary a decade ago.
Online Poker Is Far from Dead
There’s no doubt that poker is much tougher today than at any other point in its history. That said, Fedor Holz has been clear on what he thinks is achievable in the modern game today, and he is a guy who knows poker inside and out.
One piece of advice which is more applicable today than in the past is to focus on a single game. Splitting your efforts among a few different variants will only slow your progress down.
