Calvin Anderson Wins Fifth WSOP Bracelet in $10,000 Eight-Game Championship

Calvin Anderson has won his fifth WSOP bracelet after topping an all-star field in the $10K Eight-Game Championship for $413,446.

A tough field of 189 entrants formed on Day 1 which was expected to play down to a finish yesterday.

Calvin Anderson ended Day 3 in front after an hour of heads-up play but no winner could be determined before the clock was well past midnight local time.

When Anderson and Dai Ishibashi returned in the afternoon to resume play, the American  sealed the win without any drama to bag that fifth bracelet and elevate him into a very select group of poker players.

Anderson told reporters:

“I’ve never really taken down a big eight-game tournament, this is what the player’s championship used to be.

“To win this is certainly a great accomplishment, what I set out to do. I have a lot of titles in different games, but then you throw them all in the mix and to navigate a field like this, it’s rewarding, it feels really good actually to accomplish something like that.”

Final Action

With only two players returning to the hall, the min cash for the day was a cool $271,351.

Having already had an hour of heads-up battle the night before, both players knew exactly where they needed to target their opponent.

As Ishibashi was trailing Anderson and the stacks were quite short, the Japanese player needed to gamble and go for high-variance lines in games such as PLO.

But sadly for him, Anderson knew how to counter this strategy and it took no more than 90 minutes of play for the American to send his rival to the rail and claim the title.

“In PLO I was only limping, in hold’em I was playing pretty freaking passive, where normally, throughout the tournament, I was actually bullying other people in those games.

“The last hand of the day, I did not want to get it in with ace-king-queen-nine, but he knew he needed to gamble there. Maybe my hand was a little bit better than I thought it was, but it’s just not a situation I want to be in where I can hand-read so well in every other game.”
