Short Deck to debut at the 2019 World Series of Poker

What is Short Deck Poker?

Before we get into the exciting news, we first want to explain what Short Deck is and how it works?

Short Deck, also known as Six-Plus Hold’em is a variant of No-Limit Texas Hold ’em, where the 2s through 5s cards are removed from the deck, which means the deck only consists of 36 cards.

How Short Deck Poker works

Therefore, the dynamic of the game as well as the poker hand rankings change e.g. a flush beats a full house in Short Deck.

Short Deck originated in Asia and is already a favorite of Asian High Rollers as it is an absolute action game.

It is part of the Triton Super High Roller Series and generates insane action and big pots as there are a lot all-ins on the flop.

Now it has been announced that Short Deck will be part of this year’s 50th Anniversary WSOP.

2019 WSOP schedule released

So it didn’t come as a big surprise that it got added to the most important poker tournament series in the world.

To be precise, it was already added before at the WSOP Circuit Sydney 2018. Short Deck exceeded the expectation by generating a respectable 172 players.

“We had good positive feedback”

WSOP Vice President Seth Palansky said:

“We had good positive feedback from the staff at Star Sydney for the event there. They were excited to be the first to run it under the WSOP umbrella and were pleased at how it was received and how it went. The format under consideration for us would be with the 5 up community cards and each player ante and there’s a button ante that’s double the player ante.”

Save the Date: June 2nd 2019

The first-ever Short Deck event at the WSOP will take place on Sunday, June 2nd at 6 pm.

The buy-in will be $10,000 and the players can expect an excellent deepstack structure as the tournament is scheduled as a 4-day event.

In addition to that, it is expected that the organizers will also add some Short Deck events with cheaper buy-ins to the full 2019 WSOP schedule and there will also be Short Deck cash games running in the Pavillion room this year.

“Players should expect terrific structures”

WSOP Vice President Jack Effel said:

“We are proud to be the only tournament series offering such a wide variety of poker variants. Players at this buy-in level should continue to expect terrific structures, with registration open until Day 2 in most cases and plenty of play to determine the champion in each discipline.”
