Daniel Negreanu’s celebrations as WSOP Player of the Year have been cut short after a journalist spotted that points handed out for results in Vegas this summer were flawed, leading to Robert Campbell being awarded the title in a shocking reversal.
A huge turn of events makes Robert Campbell WSOP Player of the Year
@shaundeeb @RealKidPoker @Kevmath @WSOP @SonicJaxx2019 you should check #68, according to official report DN got 213.1 points, but he didn't cash there. All places from 32 to 46 in #68 are messed up with #87. https://t.co/LUO6oWfNz8

The incredible mistake completely upturned the top three places which had seen Negreanu win the award in a nail-biting finish at the WSOP Europe in Rozvadov.
DanielNegreanu pipped both Campbell and Shaun Deeb after the latter had finished 9th in the final event, the Colossus, believing that 5th was needed to claim the PoY title.
Matt Glantz picked up on the drama with an explanatory tweet.
Major POY drama unfolding.
Imagine thinking you won POY, but you didn't due to clerical error.
Imagine thinking you didnt win POY, but you did due to clerical error.
Imagine being 3 of 11 in final event told you need 5th place to win POY but you only needed 9th.
Sux for all 3.

Daniel Negreanu’s Sportsmanship
Negreanu, who had been ecstatic at his victory and claimed it was ‘acknowledgment of a lot of hard work, long grueling days against top competition,’ took the blow well when news broke today…
Congrats mate! Some good news coming your way. Well deserved champ. 👏👏👏 https://t.co/BkcrXECuXo

…although Campbell was among the last to hear the news, touchdown in Dubai, revealing his phone on fire from friends and colleagues breaking the story to him…

The WSOP immediately came in for harsh criticism, Glantz’s original finding what many might think an appropriate and on-the-mark reply…
Scene @wsop boardroom. “And the best part is players like Shaun, Daniel, Robert, Chris Ferguson they’ll just keep ramming money in, and all we have to do is put a piece of fabric with their name and photo. Shit we don’t even have to keep accurate track of it”. pic.twitter.com/APN64c5uZO

Negreanu himself didn’t escape the sharp tongue of certain poker fans, some questioning how KidPoker himself – a player who keeps meticulous records – could have overlooked the extra points he was credited with from the $1k WSOP.com Online event 68 from Vegas.

…another Twitter user added: ‘Big fan of Daniel, but how did he not notice this??? He kept quite a clear track of his point totals. I’m not jumping to assumptions, but it doesn’t look good.’
At the time of going to press, the WSOP has yet to make an official announcement on the matter.
