Disgruntled poker player goes on a rampage in Brooklyn shooting

This story sounds like it’s straight out of the 19th Century American frontier. A man believed he was cheated in a game of poker, so he returned with a hand gun and took revenge.

However, this isn’t the Wild West. Unfortunately, this is present day New York City where the Brooklyn shooting just took place.

The Illegal Gambling Den in New York

The shooting happened last week at the Triple A Aces Private & Social Rental Place in Crown Heights.

The joint served as an underground gambling hub which constantly received complaints from people living nearby. There are very few casinos in New York City and they usually don’t offer poker, only the slot machine variation, video poker.

Thus if you’re looking for some poker action in NYC, you’ll probably have to look up a dubious private card club, akin to what poker fans saw in the classic movie Rounders.

That is exactly what Chester Goode decided to do.

The Details of the Brooklyn Shooting

First off, let’s make one thing clear: the police are still trying to determine the shooter, Chester Goode’s motives.

However, the fact that he came to the club to play poker has already been confirmed. So much so that The New York Times published an article with the headline referring to him as a “poker player”.

They also quoted the brother of one of the victims of the shooting:

“The detectives told us a guy at the club was cheated and wanted his money back” – said the grieving Eddie Baldwin.

So far that seems to be the most likely reason behind Goode’s killing spree.

Mr. Baldwin’s older brother, Terrence Bishop was one of the 4 people who were murdered in the recent Brooklyn shooting. A bouncer at the club, Dominick Wimbush and one of Goode’s acquaintances, John Thomas were also killed at the scene.

The mass shooter, Chester Goode, was eventually gunned down by the hero Dominick Wimbush. Unfortunately, as we wrote above, Mr. Wimbush also died in the gunfight.

Goode entered the card room 7 AM on Saturday local time. He pulled out a handgun and told everyone to get down, then started firing at the patrons.

Based on the bullet casings found at the crime scene, he shot 15 rounds from a 9-millimeter handgun. Wimbush returned four shots before both men died.

No arrest has been made so far in this quadruple murder case. Since the perpetrator is already dead, it’s unclear whether anyone would be charged with a crime.

Not a Good Few Weeks for Poker

In recent days, poker news bled into mainstream media for all the wrong reasons.

Infamous cheater Mike Poslte’s case was talked about on ESPN’s Sports Center. Last week, a man who committed suicide because of his poker losses received national media attention in India. Also, the “WSOP Naked Bandit” has just been found not mentally competent to stand trial after being indicted on terrorism threat charges.

We can only hope that the news cycle turns for the better for poker soon.
