Poker Hand of the Week – Jake Daniels Owns Daniel Negreanu in a $126K Pot

“The Nosebleeds” week at Poker After Dark finally brought back real high stakes cash game action. In our Poker Hand of the Week Jakes Daniels outplays and absolutely owns Daniel Negreanu, when he brilliantly turns the weaker hand into a bluff.

Poker Hand of the Week Setup

As the name implies “The Nosebleeds” was a high stakes cash game week at Poker After Dark featuring high rollers and top poker pros such as Daniel Negreanu, Dan Smith, MJ Gonzales, Scott Seiver, Matt Berkey and Zach Franzi.

Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

Jake Daniels raises from the button to $1,800 with 9♠8♠ and Daniel Negreanu makes a huge 5.3x 3-bet from the small blind to $9,500 holding A♥9♦. Jake calls. Pot Size: $20,600

Flop:

2-way to a flop of 10♠8♣A♦. Great flop for DNegs, who hits top pair, while Jake has just enough to continue with bottom pair.

Negreanu choses a relatively small cbet sizing by betting $5,200 into $20,600 (25% pot), which makes it an easy call for Daniels having flopped a pair. Pot Size: $31,000

Turn:

The 4♣ on the turn is basically a blank except for the fact that it puts a potential flush draw out there.  Now Daniel sizes up by betting two thirds pot with $20,000 into $31,000.

After thinking for a few seconds, Jake announces “All-In”, much to the surprise of Negreanu, who quickly asks for a count.

The dealer counts $74,700, which is almost 1.5x pot and a big overbet. DNegs thinks for almost a minute before mucking the best hand, while Jake Daniels collects a nice $125,700 pot with just bottom pair.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

Let’s analyse this sick hand and overbet ownage street by street. Jake’s preflop button raise with 98s is pretty standard, since Suited Connectors are great cash game hands, especially when played in position.

Same applies to Daniel’s 3-bet with A9o against a loose and aggressive opponent such as Jake Daniels, except for the sizing, which is a bit (too) big in my opinion, since it screams re-steal.

The flop is very good for DNegs as it is giving him top pair, while Jake can’t fold to a 25% pot continuation bet, when he has flopped a pair, so it basically plays itself.

Not so the turn though as Jake Daniels comes up with an unexpected move that even surprises Daniel Negreanu. After DNegs fires a pretty large second barrel of 2/3 pot, he overbet shoves All-In.

Jake beautifully turns his hand/bottom pair into a bluff as this move looks very strong and he would play the same way with a flopped set or Top Two.

But and this is a big but, the turn is basically a blank and hasn’t changed anything. On top of that, Jake is very polarized here due to the overbet meaning he either has the Nuts or nothing.

Who is familiar with Jake Daniels game knows that he is makes a lot of moves and is often bluffing, which are tendencies you should definitely consider in this spot.

DNegs goes deep into the tank and then makes the wrong decision, which is folding, while Jake collects a huge $126K pot with just bottom pair.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

Brilliant play by Jake Daniels, who completely owns Daniel Negreanu in this hand.

Jake knows that Daniel is rather tight in big pots and probably even puts him on a weak top pair. He knows that he can get Negreanu off a one paired hand with this strong overbet shove, so he correctly decides to turn his hand into a bluff.

Overbet ownage at its finest by Jake Daniels and a questionable fold by Daniel Negreanu. Why? Because Jake is a very aggressive player, who makes lots of moves and you shouldn’t fold top pair against such opponents in a button vs. small blind situation as this is -EV in the long run.
