Team partypoker member Patrick Leonard is planning on putting his own money up for a new leaderboard promotion. The British MTT superstar tweeted the idea this week with the aim of enticing the best players to take part.
I’m planning on doing a leaderboard promotion on party next year where I put the $ up. I want it to be competitive so that the best players do it, and will be decent $ incentive, but I don’t want it to be driven by “most cashes”or by results in super high buy ins.Any suggestions?

Patrick Leonard Giving Back to Poker
Patrick Leonard tells how he has wanted to give back to the game for a long time. Being prepared to hand over his own cash to promote poker shows exactly how much this means to him.
He wants to start a new drive to popularise poker by inspiring people that big money can still be won. New heros will be created, and previously anonymous crushers who take part will get to show the poker community who they really are.
I’ve wanted to give back to poker for a long time and think I could do a good job of this. I feel like we need to popularise poker by inspiring people that the games are still very beatable and creating new hero’s for up and coming players.

Up and coming players are getting into poker in an era where there is too much talk about how difficult it is to win. Poker has always been tough, but today there are so many options for improving your game. There really is no excuse these days.
Hard work trumps anything to do with talent and all the information is out there if you look hard enough.
A Fair Points System
This year has seen much criticism of the World Series of Poker Player of the Year Leaderboard. Leonard will make his own version much fairer taking into account all the feedback that has been published
This will be done by steering the emphasis away from who has the most cashes or binks one good score in a super high buy-in event.
The initial plan is to have two separate prize pools. The first will have $25,000 added by Leonard and any player can opt in for free. The second will have $10,000 added by Leonard and will cost $5,000 to buy in.
He will also reach out to third parties to add more value with extra prizes. Examples might be a monthly top three as well as stuff like watches and hotel packages.
The structure for both leaderboards will be something like half the prize pool for monthly rankings and the other half for the final standings at the end of the year. Only the top 10 months will count giving the hardcore MTT grinders the chance to get a couple of months off over the year.
The results will take into account ROI%, average buy-in, and volume .
Teaming Up
Players will split into teams during the big festivals such as Powerfest and MILLIONS Online to create even more excitement. Possibly along the lines of geography or something similar.
Another idea to raise the profile of the leaderboards is to allow those on the rail to buy action from some of the players who don’t want to put up all the money themselves.
Most players who play a regular schedule will already have this sorted out, but a bespoke system to encourage participation from those who can’t play is a great idea.
Patrick Leonard clearly loves poker and wants the very best for it. When people such as him take this time and effort, as well as putting their hand into their own pocket, we should rally behind and make sure this happens.
