Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

Dan Shak just calls Trevor Pope’s UTG raise with A♣10♦ and James Board makes it $3,500 to go. Both Shak and Pope with 9♦7♦ call. Pot Size: $11,000

Flop:

The Q♥10♣3♣ flop is very interesting as it gives Bord top pair, while Shak has middle pair top kicker and a backdoor flush draw.

Both Dan and Trevor check over to James Bord, who fires an almost pot size bet of $10,000. Pope quickly folds, but Shak makes the call. Pot Size: $31,000

Turn:

The J♣ is another spicy card as it gives both players good flush draws, while Dan is drawing to the Nuts. He checks again and this time Bord checks behind. Pot Size: $31,000

River:

The 5♦ on the river is a complete blank and Dan Shak leads out for $7,000 disguising his bluff with a tiny value bet of 23% pot.

James thinks only a few seconds, flicks in the call and collects a nice $45,000 pot.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

Very interesting hand and a good idea by Dan Shak to go for a Value Bet bluff, but poor execution. Let’s take an in-depth look to see why.

Preflop Dan Shak sets up a trap by only calling with A10o as he knows that the most aggressive player sits right behind him and might make a play at the pot.

This is exactly what happens as Bord makes a large raise of almost 6x. Both Pope and Shak call though.

Both Bord and Shak flop big hands, which leads to a big continuation bet and a call.

The turn is a very good card for Dan Shak as it brings him the nut flush draw and a gutshot in addition to his pair of tens, which equals odds of 36%.

Dan checks and James checks back as the flush draw came in.

The river is a blank and Shak decides to represent the flush and go for a Value Bet Bluff.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

The idea to disguise a bluff as a value bet is decent in this spot as Shak can easily have a flush.

However, James Bord is known as a very sticky player, who doesn’t like to give up easily, so Shak’s betsize is way too small.

Betting only 23% pot will never get a player type like James Bord to fold top pair.

Would Dan Shak have gone really big and maybe overbet the pot by announcing All-In, he had $35,000 behind, there is a very decent chance that this play would have worked.
