Seth Davies Wins Maiden Triton title for $1.5million

Seth Davies bagged his maiden Triton Poker title last night, scooping the $1,490,741 first prize in event #6 in Montenegro for his 6th lifetime 7-figure score.

There were 143 entries (80 unique) to the $50k as buy-ins ramped up at the Maestral Casino in Budva, some players arriving just in time to warm up for the $200k Invitational kicking off today.

Twenty-three players would pick up a chunk of the $7.15 million prizepool and day 2 saw the bubble burst when Stanley Tang had his aces cracked by Fedor Holz and his fumes ripped away by Mikita Bodyakovsky – a painful but illustrious exit.

By the time they reached the final table, we had lost Triton Monte Carlo’s MVP, Vladimir Korzinin (18th for $90k), Dan Smith (11th for $139k), Stephen Chidwick (10th for $139k) and Alex Foxen (9th for $166k).

That still left us a final table of absolute poker beasts, Holz, Simao, Bodyakovsky and Davies all box office names. Taiwan’s Poseidon Ho may not be well known yet, but he has a name you’re unlikely to forget. Yesterday was his first final table and he departed quickly…

Ho: J♦ 10♠

Dickerson: A♠ 9♦

Ho’s last 10 bigs went in on the flop…

Flop: K♥ Q♠ K♠

But his open-ended bricked…

Turn: 8♥

River: 7♥

…and Ho had to settle for 8th and $208,000.

By this point, Davies —with 17 final tables and 37 cashes at his name courtesy of Triton Poker events — had only 5 big blinds. That would soon change.

As Davies chipped up above average, Belcher fell to Velasevic’s aces and then Holz also hit the rail, a counterfeiting river the culprit. When Bodyakovsky, looking for Triton title #6 also bust, the remaining quartet had locked up $615,000.

Brazilian pro Joao Simao, surprisingly making his Triton debut, had to settle for 4th spot, a river bluff backfiring after Davies had trapped with a flopped pair of aces.

There was little to choose between stacks by this stage and the poker gods had their say. Dickerson needed a double but…

With Davies holding a 37-20 big blind lead against his Serbian foe, they decided on an ICM deal to reduce the variance, leaving $54k to play for:

  • Davies: $1,436,741
  • Velasevic $1,298,259

It didn’t last long, Davies check-calling every street in the hand below to bag the win:

Velasevic: 9♦ 6♠

Davies: K♥ 6♣

Board: K♦ 8♥ 7♠ J♠ 4♥

Davies was surprised when told by reporters afterwards about his Triton numbers:

“When you start throwing all those numbers out, 17 final tables and I’ve never even been heads up!?! That’s a big number,” Davies said. “Most of my biggest success has been on other tours, so it’s really nice to finally have a win at Triton, especially when it means so much to me.”

Of his historic win, he added: “Poker’s a hard game, especially tournament poker, and when a couple of things don’t go your way it just feels like the whole world is falling down on top of you. So, when everything goes this way, it just feels incredible.”

“We were five handed and everybody had the same amount of chips,” Davies said. “It was just madness and when things are that way, you’ve got to run well. And I ran well. I won a bunch of pre-flop all-ins, made a bunch of big hands. It was really anybody’s game and it just went my way today.”
