About the WSOP

Short history. The World Series of Poker began in 1970 at Binion’s Horseshoe with a single table of seven legends. Benny Binion crowned Johnny Moss the first “World Champion.”

Today the WSOP runs for seven weeks, hands out 100‑plus gold bracelets, and pays well over $300 million each summer.

How it works. Each tournament, Hold’em, Omaha, Stud, even Dealer’s Choice, is its own fight for a bracelet. Buy-ins range from $300 (Casino Employees) up to $250,000 (Super High Roller). Bust once and you’re out, except in “re-entry” events where you can fire again.

Why bracelets matter. A bracelet is poker’s Super Bowl ring. Phil Hellmuth leads with 17. Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 win sparked the online poker boom. The WSOP still changes lives every year.

First‑Timer Tips ✈️

  • 2Pick up your player card early.
Badge collection opens at 8 am; grabbing it before noon saves you a 45‑minute queue.
  • 3Know the new phone rule.
All electronic devices are banned once an event reaches the final three tables, tell your rail and bring an analog watch if you run deep .
  • 4Bring two IDs and tax info.
    A passport + driver’s license works best. Cashes of $5k+ trigger W‑9 (US) or W‑8BEN (non‑US) paperwork.
  • 5Plan your bankroll.
Buy‑ins now range from $300 to $250k; most mid‑stakes grinders fire 4–6 events plus satellites. Carry some cash for tips and food, even if you bankroll through Luxon.
  • 6Book a nearby room early.
Horseshoe & Paris sell out fast; Flamingo and LINQ are cheap backups within a 10‑minute walk.
  • 7Stay healthy.
Las Vegas is hot and bone‑dry; pack electrolyte tablets, sunscreen, and a light hoodie for the AC. Take every 20‑minute break to stretch and snack.
