Potential Superuser MoneyTaker69 Caught on GGPoker

A potential superuser with the screen name “MoneyTaker69” has been caught on GGPoker due to poker community efforts before major damage could be done. Find out everything we know so far below.

What happened at GGPoker?

GGPoker has been at the centre of a potential superuser scandal this week, the industry-leading giants refunding players and increasing security measures after being hit by a sophisticated hack.

Potential Supersuer Caught Quickly on GGPoker

The security breach was spotted after one player – MoneyTaker69 – posted off-the-scale results in cash games and tournaments.

An investigation revealed that they had customised the game client through a hitherto unknown vulnerability in a newly-installed feature.

Fellow GGPoker players had spotted the highly unusual stats posted by Moneytaker69, who posted a win rate of 90bb/100 over 9800 cash game hands in December.

A VPIP/PFR of 53/17 increased the raised eyebrows and suspicions, as did their play in winning the $150 GGMasters Sunday MTT for $47,586.80.

An investigation was launched by GGPoker, which discovered that MoneytTaker69 had somehow decompiled the game client via the “Thumbs Up/Down” table reaction.

Fears of a new superuser scandal on the scale of Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker were quashed when it was revealed that hole cards were not compromised.

Instead, the hacker – potentially connected to the infamous Moneytaker cybercrime group that has targeted banks and financial institutions – “was able to deduce all-in equity by exploiting a client-side data leak vector,” GGPoker revealed.

An emergency update issued on December 16th was initially unable to plug the leak but GGPoker have since issued security patches.

This was done “to prevent further client-side data leaks of this kind”. They have also added “solutions that will detect and prevent players from customizing the game client to their benefit.”

MoneyTaker69 has been banned and had their winnings confiscated, with $29,795 refunded by GGPoker and a promise that impacted tournaments would be settled quickly.

GGPoker said of the breach: “We sincerely apologize for the incident, which has caused many poker players to worry about the game’s integrity and shaken their trust in GGPoker to provide the best poker experience.

“We are actively recruiting to double the size of our technical security team”

“We take this incident very seriously and continue to work hard not to disappoint poker players. Additionally, we are actively recruiting to double the size of our technical security team and are enlisting help from renowned security professionals to ensure that online poker is safer than ever.”

“We would also like to thank the poker community. This incident further proves the power of our community and the poker players’ hive minds, as constructive community feedback gave us great confidence in resolving the issue. We will continue to take community feedback seriously and open our ears to all comments and suggestions. Let’s build a safe future together.”
