Phil Ivey cashes in Caribbean Poker Party Short Deck

Phil Ivey extended his run of big cashes this year at the partypoker Caribbean Poker Party in the Bahamas, and it seems that Short Deck poker has given the legendary pro a new lease of life.

This week he popped up in the Bahamas to take part in the $25k buy-in Short Deck event, the opposition including Ike Haxton, Jason Koon, last year’s WSOP Main Event winner John Cynn and around forty others.

The 36-card variant, popularised in Asia and brought to Europe on the big stage by Triton Poker, seems to suit the 10-times WSOP bracelet winner.

He fought his way to 4th place behind winner Daniel Dvoress, a $126,250 cash that brings his autumn winnings to over $1.7million – close to $1.5million of that from Short Deck tournaments.

It wasn’t clear what Ivey would do following this summer’s WSOP, his long-running edge-sorting legal beef with the Borgata Casino seeing lawyers for the casino turn up at the Rio and put a hold on his PPC winnings.

A chunk of that $124,410 cash was also claimed by Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates and high stakes amateur Ilya Trincher, the duo claiming they had staked Ivey for the event.

One might expect Ivey to head straight back to the cash-game tables of Macau, where he seemed to have made a second life in recent years.

Instead, Ivey decided that the WSOP Europe inRozvadov was worth a visit, and his Kings Casino sojourn was a very profitable one.

He started off with a 9th place and €65,947 ($73,967) cash in the €25k Short Deck High Roller and then followed it up with a huge runner-up spot in the €100k Kings Super High Roller, taking €826,500 ($923,639) behind the winner, Kings Casino boss Leon Tsoukernik.

Not content with that, a few days later he came second again, this time for €384,750 ($429,274) in the €50k version, and added a non-Short Deck 8th place in the Diamond High Roller worth €212,504 ($236,389).

If that Short Deck sun-run was unexpected to some, it really shouldn’t have been.

Ivey pretty much fell off the tournament grid for more than two years after his huge win at the 2015 Aussie Millions LK Boutique Challenge, a US$1,710,854 cash.

He popped up just once to scoop another $656,500 at the Triton SHR during the WPT in the Philippines in January of 2016, but then we saw almost nothing of the legend at the tables as he battled legal woes.

In May of 2018, however, Triton Poker brought their SHR tour to Montenegro, and Ivey showed off some serious Short Deck skills, doubtless honed in the nosebleed cash games of Macau.

A heads-up win over Jungleman in the HK250k event was worth US$604,992, Ivey pictured below with Triton co-founder Richard Yong.

Ivey followed that up with a 3rd place in the HK$1million buy-in tournament – this one for a whopping US$1,666,480 payday.

When we add up all his Short Deck cashes, they amount to almost $4million of his $28million lifetime tournament cashes – a Short Deck masterclass that few others have managed.

Phil Ivey may have his troubles, but they somehow seem to disappear when 18 cards leave the deck.
